about

This song was written in a small studio with only a piano in it at the Banff Centre of the Arts at the base of Sleeping Buffalo Mountain In Alberta, Can. The song was inspired by this vast landscape and the main character in the tune is delusional in thinking they control this environment - a personification of some of the modern egoism we've seen lately in politics and culture. The twist comes at the end when we realize the character is only a child caught up in an imaginary fantasy world.

lyrics

I never knew that the sun and moon saw things differently than you and I in the day and night
Always thought they rose for me whether I was stuck head or lost inside those lonesome clouds
I was right all along, I called the shots, the cosmos sat down by my feet just patiently listening
Change the weather on a whim or send a lightning strike across the sky, electrifying the tip of my tin foil hat
I could dig a river, move a mountain, clear a forest if it pleases me because its easy like that

The stars were my disciples and I lectured over them from my self appointed position atop this homemade podium
My finger wags in hypocrisy but my science is sure in this natural state of leader and follower
With God on my side I can never fail and Jesus whispers in my ear commands running through my body with heaven so near
And the oceans welled up into a wall and stood there waiting for the wave of the hand to set the sea down to crash

And I woke up in my little cape, my wizard hat all crumpled in the snow
And the world just stepped over me, the wind blew until my footprints didn’t show
And I reached up with a weary arm and ordered nature how I wanted it to be
And the trees arched back but then turned just to laugh at me.
